چکیده

Sheared toroidal flows can cause bifurcations to zero-turbulent-transport states in tokamak plasmas. The maximum temperature gradients that can be reached are limited by subcritical turbulence driven by the parallel velocity gradient. Here it is shown that q/ϵ (magnetic field pitch/inverse aspect ratio) is a critical control parameter for sheared tokamak turbulence. By reducing q/ϵ, far higher temperature gradients can be achieved without triggering turbulence, in some instances comparable to those found experimentally in transport barriers. The zero-turbulence manifold is mapped out, in the zero-magnetic-shear limit, over the parameter space (γ(E), q/ϵ, R/L(T)), where γ(E) is the perpendicular flow shear and R/L(T) is the normalized inverse temperature gradient scale. The extent to which it can be constructed from linear theory is discussed.

shear suppression of turbulence in diverted H-mode plasmas; role of edge magnetic shear

s. We show that strong edge magnetic shear which is generic to divertor plasmas makes the shearing of turbulence eddys in toroidal geometry more effective. From calculations of the shearing rates for KSTAR edge parameters, we conclude that the enhanced magnetic shear at the diverted KSTAR plasma edge facilitates shear suppression of turbulence and ensuing H-mode transition.

Dependence of the L- to H-mode Power Threshold on Toroidal Rotation and the Link to Edge Turbulence Dynamics

The injected power required to induce a transition from L-mode to H-mode plasmas is found to depend strongly on the injected neutral beam torque and consequent plasma toroidal rotation. Edge turbulence and flows, measured near the outboard midplane of the plasma (0.85 < r/a < 1.0) on DIII-D with the highsensitivity 2D beam emission spectroscopy (BES) system, likewise vary with rotation and sugg...

Study of edge turbulence in dimensionally similar laboratory plasmas

Comparative studies between a toroidal low-temperature plasma and drift-Alfvén-wave simulations were carried out in order to investigate the microscopic structure of turbulence. The dimensionless plasma parameters in the TJ-K torsatron [Krause 2002] are similar to those in the edge of a fusion plasma. At the same time the fluctuations can be fully diagnosed by probe arrays. Fluctuation spectra ...

Conservation of total energy and toroidal angular momentum in gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations

Predictive transport simulations of tokamak discharges are continuously improving thanks to increasing computational resources available and to the efforts made in code development. As an example of the progress, a recent work [1] with the Elmfire code demonstrates the ability of global gyrokinetic full f electrostatic particle simulations, including both neoclassical and turbulence physics, to...

Particle-in-cell simulations of electron transport from plasma turbulence: recent progress in gyrokinetic particle simulations of turbulent plasmas

Recent progress in gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations of turbulent plasmas using the gyrokinetic toroidal code (GTC) is surveyed. In particular, recent results for electron temperature gradient (ETG) modes and their resulting transport are presented. Also, turbulence spreading, and the effects of the parallel nonlinearity, are described. The GTC code has also been generalized for non-circ...
